Mahmoud A Hafez, FRCS Ed, MD
Adjunct Clinical Scientist at the Institute for Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery (ICAOS), Western Pennsylvania Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA, USA and Member of the Board of Governors for the American Fracture Association, USA. Recently, he is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Head of the Orthopaedic Department, October 6 University Hospital, Cairo, Egypt.
Graduated from Cairo University Medical School in 1985, where he also obtained his MSc in Orthopaedics. He has FRCS Ed, SICOT Dip and MD degree at the University of Leeds, UK. He Worked in UK for > 10 years, passing through basic and higher training including specialist and senior registrar and locum consultant posts. His subspecialty experience in hip and knee arthroplasty was gained from 3 international centres; Wrightington Hospital, UK, Western Pennsylvania Hospital, Pittsburgh, USA and St Michaelís Hospital, Toronto, Canada.
His special interest is computer assisted orthopaedic Surgery (CAOS) and the use of navigation particularly in hip and knee arthroplasty including hip resurfacing and MIS surgery. His interest in CAOS started in 1998 with a one- ear fellowship in navigation and robotics, University of Hull, UK. His MD project resulted in developing a novel technique of computer assisted total knee arthroplasty (TKA) using patient specific templates. He performed 45 experimental TKAs using this technique in UK and validated the accuracy of this technique during his work at ICAOS, Pittsburgh.
He is the president of the Middle East CAOS society, organised several conferences in this filed, invited as a featured speaker and session chairman in few conferences such as the Knee Summit at Cleveland Clinic, USA and CAOS International Society, Germany. He has several awards (Japanese SICOT, British Orthopaedic Association Travelling Fellowship, Pfizer Academic, Meyerding Essay of American Fracture Association) and grants (EPSRC, UK). He has 11 book chapters (most popular is in Insall-Scott, Surgery of the Knee), has 5 editorials and several journal papers. He is a reviewer to the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery-Am and Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research.
